Chapter Eighteen: Rhone

“Take Luna to Medical and give her a backdoor to the cog-filter,” I told Greer as we paused beside the hall that led to the small med bay. On the tip of my tongue, the words “pregnancy scan” tottered. But I bit them back.

“Now?” they both asked at the same time, surprised at my request.

“We’re about to debark,” I explained. “And I have no idea what we’re walking into. If something should happen and we’re separated, which I don’t plan to be, Luna needs to be able to recognize the ship.”

“But I want—”

“Rhone’s right,” Greer interrupted her. “It’ll only take a minute.”

“The same way the rib scans back at your office only took a minute?” She eyed him doubtfully.

Greer and I both chuckled. My female had a salty sense of humor. “I already have an app loaded. It’s just a tiny injection behind the ear,” he promised.

“Fine,” she huffed, obviously not excited about the procedure.

“Bring her to the bridge when you’re done,” I called after Greer as he led her away.

He didn’t answer, just waved a hand in the air behind him. Insubordinate bastard.

I stepped into the middle of a fucking shit storm as soon as I hit the control room. Torque was arguing with the holographic image of Lor while Shadow was explaining to someone on the com how much it hurt to have your fucking arms ripped off one at a time without anesthetic. Not a hollow threat, not when delivered by Shadow.

“You don’t know what you’re fucking getting into,” Lor groused. “I’m telling you, Torque, my guys will handle it.”

Torque looked pissed, not a condition that I recommended anyone claim credit for. His voice vibrated anger that I didn’t hear often from him, and I knew immediately that he was out for blood.

“You think I’m fucking going to sit here on my ass when my brother, my youngest brother, is missing?” he asked calmly. “This is not a conversation we’re going to have, Lor. Just tell me where to land this godsdammed ship before I set it down in your fucking front yard.”

Lor was stone-faced, his eyes promising retribution. But to my surprise, he looked over at someone I couldn’t see and nodded.

A second later, Shadow shouted, “Got it. Entering the coordinates now.”

Torque nodded a silent thanks to Lor and the image disappeared.

“Someone want to fill me in?” I asked as I fell into my chair.

“Lor sent a couple of guys over to Callion’s. Place was trashed, blood all over the fucking place. Callion nowhere to be found,” he said tersely.

“What’s the plan?”

“Borrow some bikes from Lor and head over to Callion’s. I need to see it,” Torque replied as he turned to look at me.

His gaze dropped to the claiming mark on my neck and his eyes narrowed. Definitely not the time to have this conversation. I shook my head to let him know that I hadn’t bitten Luna and that I didn’t particularly want to discuss it right then, hoping he understood. He looked like he had more to say, but I moved the subject back to Callion.
